Renovation under the National Recovery Plan: Restoration of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Baia Sprie Has Begun

Baia Sprie, 2025 — With the support of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the complete renovation of the Roman Catholic Church “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” in Baia de Sus begins. The project aims to restore and conserve one of the locality’s most important architectural heritages.

The church can be renewed after a long preparation process: the documentation began back in 2014, and partial renovation works have been carried out since then. A significant milestone was reached last year, with the signing of the financing contract, securing 2.4 million euros for the reconstruction. The investment holds particular importance for the local community: the church is the largest Catholic church in Maramureș and in the Satu Mare diocese, an important Marian pilgrimage site, and a symbol of the miners’ pride and of the mining region.

The renovation will bring physical improvements: the façade will be restored, the roof structure rehabilitated, and the statues at the entrance will be reconstructed as 1:1 replicas, preserving the original form and atmosphere. The works are carried out by KÉSZ România, with the support of the design office “9 Optiune,” ensuring professional precision and careful management of the heritage.

The execution is estimated at approximately 27 months, so the complete renovation of the church is expected to be finished by mid-2027.
