St. Michael’s Church in Cluj-Napoca Wins the Europa Nostra Award

The restoration project of Saint Michael Church in Cluj-Napoca was awarded the Europa Nostra – European Heritage Award in the “Conservation and Adaptive Reuse” category. The distinction was granted with co-financing from the European Union’s Creative Europe program.

The restoration of the church was carried out by KÉSZ România as the general contractor, with the project representing an example of professional excellence and model collaboration. The jury particularly appreciated the sensitive and interdisciplinary approach to structural consolidation, especially valuable for a historic monument located in a seismic zone. During the works, not only was the structure reinforced, but the interior spaces were also restored and modernized in accordance with the character of the site, and medieval artistic elements were discovered during archaeological research. The church tower has become accessible to visitors, and the exhibition space provides insight into the restoration process while offering a broad panorama of the city of Cluj-Napoca.

The official award ceremony will take place on October 7, 2024, in Bucharest, during the European Cultural Heritage Summit.

Additionally, the church achieved a remarkable result in the public vote: based on over 10,000 votes, it ranked third.

We thank everyone who contributed to the success of this exceptional project!
